Yanko Cap toe service boot dark brown waxy commander

$252

A special version of the popular cap toe service boot, made in dark brown Waxy commander leather from renowned British tannery Charles F. Stead. It's a waxed suede that is water resistant and very durable, and has a lovely vibrant character, which will get lighter in shade over time. Made on the W934 last, which is a classic service boot last with a round rather roomy toe. Goodyear welted so they can easily be resoled, inside entirely in leather, heel stiffener in leather board that adapts well to your feet. Underneath is a sturdy Vibram Commando lug rubber sole, which provides excellent grip on most surfaces.

These are relatively sturdy shoes that are made to be worn hard. We're pleased to be able to offer welted boots fully made in Europe from full grain leather at such a competitive price. They need to go through the factory a little quicker and the level of finishing is a bit more basic, but it's surely a lot of shoes for the money, and after all it's footwear that's meant to take a beating.

Yanko is one of the oldest still active classic shoe brands from Spain, founded in 1961. They were one of the world's largest manufacturers of Goodyear welted shoes in the late 20th century, producing over a million pairs of shoes each year. Today they are much smaller, but have a solid reputation as an affordable manufacturer of everything from men's dress shoes and boots to classic Belgian loafers.

Construction:

Goodyear welted.
Leather board heel stiffeners which adapt to your feet (cheaper brands usually use plastic heel stiffeners which makes the shoes hard to break in).

Sole:
Vibram rubber sole.

Sizes:
Sizes are considered normal, they are comparable to other Goodyear welted shoes like Skolyx, TLB Mallorca, Loake, Crockett & Jones and Carmina. Here you'll find an extensive size guide to all our shoes. It's common for boot users to use a thin insole in leather when using the boots with thin socks, and then remove the insole when using it with thicker socks. If you are still uncertain on your size, please e-mail ktj@skolyx.se for further guidance.

Shoe care:
The leather is stuffed with wax and oils so it's resistant in itself, as long as they are brushed off regularly, but from time to time it's recommended to top up with new shoe cream. Use Saphir Medaille d'Or Oiled Leather Crème Pommadier in dark brown applied with an application brush, leave to dry, brush off excess. We recommend using cedar shoe trees to prevent cracking from excessive creasing and extend the life of the boots.

Basic sizing info

The sizes of our Goodyear welted shoes from Skolyx, Yanko and TLB Mallorca are generally comparable to other quality welted shoes from brands such as Loake, Crockett & Jones and Carmina. More than 90% of our customers find the correct size on the first attempt, and in the unlikely event that you don't find the right size straight away, you may of course exchange to another size, or return the shoes.

If you have no previous experience of Goodyear welted shoes, and have mainly worn trainers or glued dress shoes, there are different traditions about how to grade the sizes (one specify the size according to the foot length that should fit in the shoe, the other specify the size according to the dimensions of the shoe itself). This is why most people wear welted shoes about a full size smaller than what they wear in sneakers, running shoes or other cemented shoes. As an example, if you have a size UK 9 in your regular shoes, many people have a size EU 42 / UK 8 / US 9 in welted shoes.

Note also that our Goodyear welted shoes from Skolyx, Yanko and TLB are all made in UK sizes, so there the steps are correct. The conversion to EU sizes will be approximate, and for the US, our shoes follow the standard with one size up to compared to UK.

Please note, for loafers from our own brand Skolyx, we recommend going down half a size compared to other Goodyear welted shoes, and for our own sneakers and Belgian loafers and Traveler shoes from Yanko, you'll find detailed guidance on the product pages.

.

Find your size according to what you wear in other brands

If you know your size in shoes from other manufacturers, here is the table below where you can see what the majority of our customers choose the size of our welted shoes compared to other brands.

If we take Meermin as an example, the table suggests "-0.5". This means that in our welted shoes you should go down 0.5 in size compared to what you have in Meermin. For example, if you have UK 8 in your Meermin, we recommend UK 7,5 in our shoes.

Note that of course personal preferences play a big role, this should be seen as guidance, not definitive answers.

The comparisons are our UK sizes against those of others in UK. The brands that have US sizes as standard are compared with our US size indications, it's clarified in the table in these cases.

Size comparison chart

Find your size based on the length of your feet

Although the shape of your feet is very important, in many cases you can calculate your shoe size by measuring the length of your feet and looking at the table below. If you have very wide feet, an extra high instep or similar, you should also consider this and look at the other ways to calculate your size as well. Of course, personal taste is also something that is important. Some people prefer very tight shoes while others prefer more spacious shoes. Therefore, if you have other brands and lasts that fit very well, the comparisons above can be even better guidance.

Please note, for loafers from our own brand Skolyx, we recommend going down half a size compared to other Goodyear welted shoes, and for our own sneakers and Belgian loafers and Traveler shoes from Yanko, you'll find detailed guidance on the product pages.
Measure your feet with your heel against a wall and with a tape measure, ruler or ruler lying on the floor (i.e. not by tracing your foot and then taking measurements). Here is a picture that clarifies further. The measurements in the table below are approximate, and are only guidance not facts.

Foot size chart

.

Find your size based on your Brannock sizing

Brannock is an instrument for measuring feet, which is particularly popular in the US and some other markets. But some people in Europe have also had their feet measured with it. Although in some ways it can give more guidance than just the foot length, it's still only guidance, it can differ from person to person what size you have in the same shoe model even if you have the same Brannock size.

Our welted shoes are, for most people, closest to being one size up from the Brannock US length size, and roughly in Brannock width size E. So, one of our welted shoes in size EU 42 / UK 8 / US 9 in the standard width F, corresponds roughly to Brannock 9 E. If you have a C or D width in Brannock, it usually works well to add a thin insole to fill out the volume.

.

Additional tips and advice on fit

This type of shoe is made of several layers of leather that is initially stiff, but with use moulds itself to your foot, softening and becoming flexible where it needs to soften, and providing continued support where you want this. Therefore, it's common to have to break in the shoes for a while before they become comfortable, but over time many people find that they are the most comfortable shoes they have, with a combination of support and flexibility. Our Goodyear-welted shoes also have a layer of cork in the footbed that moulds itself with use, and the heel stiffeners are made of leather board or real leather that also moulds to your feet.

After all, these are standard sizes, and feet are highly individual, so many people can get an even better fit with small, simple aids. If the shoes are a bit too big, there are, for example, tongue pads, heel grips and insoles, more info on this can be found in this guide. If the shoes are a bit too small, you can stretch them out with shoe stretchers, more info on this in this guide.
