Hats and scarves in cashmere
Cashmere is a sincerely loved material - for good reasons. The natural fibre that comes from the soft undercoat of the cashmere goat has some amazing properties. Cashmere has three times better isolation than regular sheep wool, and will automatically adjust according to the body temperature to always keep you comfortably warm. It's very light, soft, lustrous and will retain the shape better than regular wool, if washed correctly.
Our cashmere collection consists of timeless caps, scarves in the perfect size, and a lovely poncho. They are available both in versions in 100% pure cashmere, and an affordable blend where the cashmere is mixed with regular sheep wool and other materials to achieve an exclusive feel at a lower price.
All our cashmere products are made by a small factory in Italy, and all are delivered in a gift bag, which you can store the beanie in during the warmer months when not in use.
What's so special about cashmere?
Cashmere wool is known to be by far one of the softest fabric fibres in the world, which is the main reason for its immense popularity for sweaters, scarves and hats. In addition, cashmere wool insulates up to three times better than ordinary sheep's wool, and can adapt and warm just as much as needed, creating extremely comfortable garments to wear.
The fibres come from the underhair of the cashmere goat, which is extremely soft and thin, but still relatively strong. The undercoat is covered by outer layers of thicker hair and is relatively tedious to cut, and a cashmere goat can yield only 200-300 grams of cashmere wool per year. Cashmere goats live in the cold Gobi Desert and Himalayas where it can be down to 30 below in the winters, so they need this double type of hair to insulate them from the cold.
How do you wash cashmere?
Cashmere wool is not as sensitive as many people think and can last a long time if the garments are cared for properly. That said, it's recommended to wash them gently, when necessary. Since the type of cashmere, how it's knitted and so on varies a lot, you should always read the garment's care labels.
When it comes to Skolyx cashmere accessories, if they have stains or it's not enough for other reasons to just brush them off with a clothes brush and let them hang outside in the fresh air for a while, it's recommended to hand wash them in cold water with a mild detergent, like Tangent GC fine detergent. To squeeze out the water after washing, it's a good idea to roll the hat or scarf in a towel, and let the towel absorb the water for an hour or so. If you have a good washing machine with a very gentle hand wash programme, this can also be done. Then always dry the garments lying down in a well-ventilated area, or outside.
What does cashmere blend mean?
There are many different types of cashmere blends, some of which aim to achieve different properties, such as silk-cashmere blends, while others are mainly to offer the cashmere feel at a lower price, in which case they are often blended with regular wool and/or various types of synthetic fibres.
Our cashmere blend products are made from 10% cashmere, 33% merino wool, 33% viscose and 24% polyamide. This means that we can cut the price of the pure cashmere roughly in half, while retaining much of the feel and properties of cashmere wool.
