How to care for leather shoes?
The absolute most important product for caring for leather shoes is the shoe cream. Shoe cream is often mixed with wax polish, which usually comes in smaller tin cans, but shoe cream is looser in consistency and is usually found in glass jars or in tubes. Shoe cream moisturises, conditions, colours (if containing pigments), protects and adds some shine. We sell what many consider to be the world's best shoe cream, Saphir Medaille d'Or Pommadier, an all-natural product that is easy to use and gives fantastic results. Brush or wipe off dirt from leather shoes, apply a thin layer of shoe cream with a polishing cloth or applicator brush, wait 5-10 minutes and then brush up the shoes with a horsehair shoe brush. You can then, if you wish, go further with wax polish, such as Saphir Medaille d'Or Pate de Luxe, for additional protection and shine.
How do I care for suede or nubuck shoes?
A persistent myth is that suede and nubuck are sensitive materials, but this is wrong, especially if you buy shoes made from high quality suede or nubuck, as is the case with all our shoes. What's important is to spray suede and nubuck with a good waterproofing spray before use. We have superb waterproofing sprays from Saphir Medaille d'Or and Tarrago Sneakers Care that provide fantastic protection against dirt and water. Brush up your shoes with a suede brush, spray with the waterproofing spray, leave for about 30 minutes outside, then lightly brush them with a shoe brush.
How do I clean leather shoes?
We have several different shoe cleaners depending on the material and how dirty they are. For regular leather that just is a bit dirty, Saphir Medaille d'Or Leather Cleanser is superb, gentle and easy to use but still removes the dirt well. Brush the worst dirt off the shoes, apply the Cleanser to a cloth and rub the shoes clean, leave to dry. After cleaning, it's important to condition the shoes with shoe cream, preferably a coloured one that covers marks well, and possibly also wax polish again. Also Tarrago WASC! Sneakers super cleaner is a really good alternative for cleaning leather shoes, used in the same way.
How do I clean suede or nubuck shoes?
Cleaning shoes or sneakers made of suede or nubuck is best done with Saphir Medaille d'Or Omninettoyant or Tarrago WASC! Sneakers super cleaner. Brush off the worst of the dirt with a suede brush, then wet a soft brush onto which you apply the cleaning product and work up a lather on the shoes, making sure the whole shoe is cleaned, and then leave to dry. Once dry, spray them with a good waterproofing spray, Saphir Medaille d'Or Renovateur provides some care, re-colours and protects, Saphir Medaille d'Or Super Invulner or Tarrago Sneakers Nano Protector provides the best protection.
Why is shoe care important?
If everyone took care of their shoes they would last much longer, which is good both for your wallet and the environment. Shoes that are cared for also look nicer and are better for your feet. And if you buy good quality shoes, like all the ones we sell at Skolyx, you'll be well placed to have shoes that will stay with you for many, many years. Taking care of your shoes is easy, follow these four steps and you'll go a long way
- Don't wear the same pair two days in a row
- Brush/wipe off your shoes after use
- Use shoe trees
- Condition with shoe cream from time to time (if leather shoes, suede/nubuck spray with waterproofing spray)
