What are welted shoes?

A welted construction involves attaching the upper leather of the shoe with the insole and a leather strip (welt), this is done with a welt stitch. The outsole is then sewn onto the welt with a sole stitch that runs along the outside of the shoe. The advantage of the welted construction is that you can easily resole the shoes without having to take them apart completely, the welt holds everything together. When resoleing, you simply remove the sole stitch, pull off the outsole and attach a new one, which is sewn on with a new sole stitch. Welted sewn shoes can be made with a Goodyear sewing machine, which is by far the most common, or sewn entirely by hand, as in the case of our Midas shoes.

Why should I buy Goodyear welted shoes?

Buying quality shoes is a sustainable choice, good for the environment (natural materials produced under safe conditions, and durable products that last and can be repaired), for the animals (only animals that lived relatively good lives can become high-quality leather) and for working conditions (the shoes and all materials come from European tanneries and factories with good working conditions).

How long do welted shoes last?

A pair of Goodyear welted shoes made of good materials, which is the case for all the shoes we sell, has the potential to last for many, many years. Whether that's 5, 10, 15 years or even longer depends on how often the shoes are used and what they're exposed to, and how well they're cared for. All of our shoes are made from full grain leather which means that it can be cared for and take shoe care products properly, and only gets finer with age, while the welted construction means that you can resolethe shoes a number of times. Which brands do Skolyx sell?

Skolyx - As an entry-level Goodyear welted shoe, we have our own range where we offer a welted shoe with fine European full grain leather with a thin rubber sole that gives you the neat look of leather soles but with the durability of rubber. Under our own brand we also have Blake stitched patent leather shoes as well as a range of really affordable premium sneakers, made with very high specifications, these are made in Portugal.
Yanko - One step up we have the Spanish brand Yanko with more different leathers and details like closed channel soles (they hide the sole stitch for aesthetic and practical reasons) that you normally only see on shoes in higher price ranges. Yanko also has the popular Blake stitched Belgian loafers, a perfect casual shoe not least for the summer months.
TLB Mallorca - Another step up we have TLB Mallorca who offer even higher quality by working only with the finest leathers in Europe, "full reverse calf" for all suede, narrow waists and very high level of finishing. The new top range Artista is particularly impressive, considered by many shoe experts to be one of the most bang-for-the-buck shoe ranges in the world.
