Shoe brushes

Good brushes is fundamental to be able to take care of your shoes in a good way, and they make the job both easier and achieves a better result. We have developed a complete range with shoe brushes of really high quality, and also offer brushes from among others Saphir. Shoe brushes with horsehair, goat hair brushes, application brushes, suede brushes and so on, we have everything you'll need.

All our brushes are manufactured in the European centre for brush manufacturing, in the German Black Forest region, in a climate neutral factory that has made brushes for over 80 years. Made in only the finest materials, for example are all handles made in varnished beechwood, and we use bristles of natural horsehair from the tail which is more durable and minimise hairs coming loose.

What do you use a shoe brush for?

The shoe brush is a cornerstone of basic shoe care, and you should have a shoe brush that you use to remove dirt, preferably as soon as you get home. Then a shoe brush to polish up the shoe cream on your leather shoes, and a suede brush to lift the fibers on suede or nubuck shoes. More info on different types of shoe brushes below.

Which type of shoe brush is best?

Just like in many cases, shoe brushes with natural materials are usually superior. The standard shoe care brush has bristles made of horsehair, which have just the right amount of stiffness for things like polishing up shoe cream and brushing off dirt, and are very durable, especially if the bristles comes from the tail (which is the case with all of Skolyx's own German-made horsehair brushes). If you need a stiffer brush, for example good for embossed grain leather or cordovan, boar bristle shoe brushes are recommended, and soft goat hair shoe brushes are perfect for polishing up the final finish or gently brushing off dirt on shoes with a good shine.

Do I need several different shoe brushes?

What's most important is not to use the same brush for brushing off dirt, which is good if done every time you walk in the door at home, to prevent dirt from settling (use a damp cloth if it's been wet outside), as for polishing up shoe cream, since you want a clean brush for the latter. It may also be advisable to use one shoe brush for darker shoe cream and wax polish, such as black and dark brown, and another brush for lighter coloured cream, since otherwise you risk getting some darker cream and polish that stains lighter coloured shoes.

In addition to common horsehair shoe brushes, there are other types that serve other functions, such as stiffer boar bristle brushes good for embossed grain and cordovan, or soft goat hair for gently polishing up shiny finishes. You'll also need an applicator brush for applying shoe polish (if you prefer polishing cloth, you'll still need an applicator brush for the space between the uppers and the soles) and if you have suede shoes, a suede brush to lift the fibres.

Which brush do you use to clean shoes?

The universal brush is a classic shoe brush with bristles made of moderately soft horsehair, it gets the dirt off in a good and gentle way. For example, if you have shoes that you have polished to a high shine, it may be a good idea to use a goat hair brush, which is much softer and doesn't risk scratching the finish of the shoes. Ideally, make a habit of brushing dirt off your shoes as soon as you get home, so it doesn't settle into the material and lie around niggling unnecessarily. If it's really wet outside, use a damp cloth instead.

What makes Skolyx shoe brushes special?

Our own collection of shoe brushes has been developed together with one of Europe's leading brush manufacturers, based in the mountains of the German Black Forest region, where they have a long tradition of producing brushes. We have consistently chosen the highest possible specifications for our brushes, which means they are dense and fine, and for example the horsehair used comes only from the tail, which means it doesn't break as easily and minimises the risk of bristles coming loose. In addition, the handles are made from locally harvested beech wood, and the entire factory is climate neutral, including using waste heat from the manufacturing process to heat houses in the nearby village. We are also working with the factory to develop new types of brushes, so that we always have the best possible products available.
