When it's time to return to the summer house, it's not uncommon for it to smell a bit frowsy in some spaces, to find damage caused by moths or fur beetles in the linen closet, and so on. A natural and good way to counteract several of these problems is by using various products in cedar wood.
Red cedar wood has many fantastic properties, such as good moisture absorption, deodorising and antiseptic effects, prevent pests, lightweight and durable, and more (learn more about the cedar wood's specific properties in the article you find by clicking here). Below, we will walk you through how our cedar products can precent classic problems in your summer cottage, boat, caravan, mountain cabin and so on, simply spaces that are empty for extended periods.
Save textiles from pests such as moths and fur beetles
There are several insects that like to munch on textiles, most preferably stuff in wool, leather, fur or cotton. The most common in Northern Europe are the moths, which are small yellow or gray-colored butterflies of about 12-14 mm between the wing tips, and whose larvae are about 10 mm, and the fur beetle, where its the larvae which cause the damage. These are also about 10 mm long, with a brown-black shell with yellow lines over it. Fur beetles can be in the larval stage for several years, so if you notice damage, it's important to clean the space first and wash the fabrics.
Then to keep the pests away, red cedar works great, it's a natural way to remove moths and fur beetles. The scent that we humans experience as pleasant detracts the pests (even for example silverfish and spiders stay away from red cedar). Make sure to have cedar wood scattered in different places where there are textiles, for example we have hangers, cedar blocks, cedar balls, cedar sachets, shoe trees, and more. If the scent of cedar is nearby, the risk of pests getting there is minimised.
Reduce moisture in frowsy spaces
Cedar wood is one of the best types of wood to absorb moist, and it also has deodorising and antiseptic properties. This means that products in cedar wood are excellent to place in humid spaces in order to function as a natural, fragrant moisture absorber. Cedar shavings works best. You can think of them a bit like the little bags of silica balls that you often find in the packaging for newly purchased products, they are there to absorb moisture. Cedar sachets in humid spaces work the same way, only in slightly larger formats.
Speaking of humid spaces, having a cedar bag lying in your bathing bag where you have all your wet bathing clothes and towels on the way back to the summer house or caravan is also not a bad idea, smells good as well.
