How to keep your shoes and feet fresh during summer

During the summer months when warm feet often spend long days in the shoes, there can easily become a problem with a feet odour and sweaty shoes. There's a lot you can do to avoid this though, here are a few handy tips to keep your feet and shoes fresh during summer, and how to remove foot odour from shoes.


Let the shoes rest

As we usually state, one should always let shoes rest for a day after use. We sweat about a deciliter per foot every day, and when shoes are moist they wear out much faster, especially leather shoes. On hot days we sweat even more, and the heavier perspiration can also contain more strong substances that wear extra on the shoes. Therefore, it may be good to let the shoes rest even longer between uses during the warm summer months, and try not to use them more often than every third day. And of course, most preferably with cedar wood shoe trees in the shoes when resting, they both ensures that the shoes retain their shape when drying and have natural deodorizing properties.

It's different how much you sweat, and also how strong the odour one's sweat has. If you know that you perspire abundantly and that your feet and shoes can smell after a hot day, a deoderant spray for shoes are excellent. They neutralize the bad smell in the shoes and help make them fresh again. Wearing shoes that have started to smell over and over will also make your feet smell more.

Use an insole

We have the most sweat glands under our feet. The use of insoles allows you to keep a lot of the sweat away from the shoes themselves, excellent for the lifespan, and you can replace the insoles when they start to get bad and worn. Remove the insoles and let them dry freely, good for both them and the shoes. It's best if you choose insoles made from natural materials, which allow your feet to breathe during use. Avoid being barefoot

Some find it comfy to be barefoot in the shoes during summer, but if you have problems with the feet odour, it may be better to have socks, which absorb some of the sweat and reduce the friction between the foot and shoe, which can cause chafing, etc. If you wear regular trousers a pair of thin wool socks are excellent, wool naturally contributes to cool the feet down and increase air circulation. If you want the sockless look you can choose low cut so-called no-show socks or even shorter ballerina socks, which only cover the part of the foot that is in the shoe.

If barefoot, use silk spray

One could still prefer to be barefoot, maybe finding it more comfortable, or have shoes that doesn't work with any type of socks. Then there's a good option called silk barefoot spray, which contains natural silk, aloe vera and menthol, and creates like a super thin breathable sock around the feet. It reduces friction and thus minimises the risk of abrasions, while cooling the feet have a pleasant scent.
