Braces

Albert Thurston has been manufacturing braces since 1820 in its factory in England. Through the years, they have built-up an excellent reputation thanks to the high quality and comfort. All our braces are made at a 35 mm width and come with both clips (which can be removed) and leather straps to attach to the pants if you prefer.

Albert Thurston's braces have been worn by royalty and celebrities such as Michael Douglas in Wall Street and Daniel Craig as James Bond. Nowadays braces have seen a revival, and are worn by young and old alike who think it's both stylish and practical. The braces we offer are all elastic which gives good comfort and fit. How should braces fit?

Braces can be attached in two different ways. The old traditional way is to use leather straps attached to buttons on the inside of the trouser waistband. If your trousers don't have buttons, you can get a tailor to attach them, or you can do it yourself.

A more modern version is to use metal buckles that you attach to the waistband of your trousers. The advantage of this solution is that they can be used on any pair of trousers. All our braces from Albert Thurston have both leather straps and metal buckles, where you can choose which solution you want to use (and remove the one you don't use).

How should buttons for attaching suspenders fit?

The small buttons used to attach the leather straps to traditional braces should be spaced about 5 cm apart. The two at the back are placed in the middle of the trouser waistband, above the centre seam. In the front, you have to adjust where they are placed, they should fit comfortably over the shoulders, and then go vertically straight down to the trousers.

Doctors can easily attach the buttons, they make sure that the threads are not visible on the outside. If you're good with sewing, you can do it yourself.

Can you wear both braces and a belt?

No, it's not recommended. Both serve exactly the same function, therefore it will be strange to wear both at the same time. It's a bit like wearing galoshes over your rubber boots.

What colour of braces?

Braces are an accessory that you can use like many other accessories, to have something that stands out in your outfit or just to signal classic elegance. If you want your suspenders to stand out, choose colourful ones, perhaps with a nice pattern. If you want a more classic look, go for a more subtle colour, and you might want you can match the colour of the leather details with the colour of your shoes.
